We’re going to be talking about the dwindling quality of music today. No, I don’t mean the artistic quality—There is no podcast long enough to cover that subject! I’m referring to the technical quality of the recording itself. Now, I understand that most of you all are living on a budget, and sometimes have too much month at the end of your money. So, we will not be discussing super expensive, high-end equipment, or major recording studios that charge thousands of dollars per day to record your music. Instead, I’m going to give you some tips on getting a great quality sound for CHEAP!
Tip number one, microphone placement. I know most of you have home studios, ipads, iPhones, or something you use to record. That is fine, because most recorders, no matter how expensive, record at the same bit rate. What really makes the difference is the way you are transmitting your sound to the recorder. The most common way we do that is through the microphone. Maybe you don’t have the most expensive mic, but if you position it correctly and take advantage of the space around you, it can really improve the quality of the recording you capture.
Positioning is everything! Your microphone should be aligned between your lips and your chin, approximately six inches away from your face. Avoid the urge to sway back and forth on the mic while recording; although it feels natural, it makes the recording sound choppy and uneven. I know you’re getting into the groove, but try to stand as still as possible while singing into the mic. It gives you a nice fluent sound that is easy to mix once the recording is done.
